Are We There Yet?

The dreaded four words that your children ask from the back seat: Are We There Yet? House hunting is supposed to be an exciting time in your life. For many young parents it is the first house they will own and not rent. House hunting is finding the perfect house to raise the family.

It is very exciting to share the house hunting process with your children. They can run into the potential home and pick out their bedrooms, and they can decide where the swing set is going to be. However, if you are traveling with young children house hunting may not be all that it is cracked up to be. By making sure your children are happy during this process it will help you make the correct decision without having remorse from a rushed decision.

Here are a few tips when childcare are not available when you have appointments set up for house hunting:

  1. Snacks, snacks, and more snacks! The kids are going to be in/out of the car for a few hours and they are going to get hungry! I would make sure you pack a few of their favorite snacks and drinks. By bringing snacks you are saving much needed money by not stopping at a convenience store. Also, by packing snacks you are able to choose what your kids are eating without settling on what is available.
  2. Something new! A new book or a new app on the tablet/phone. Something that the children haven’t seen before! My children both love books, and I feel there is no better investment than books. Having something new helps pass the time in between each house.
  3. Make sure they are wearing comfortable clothes and shoes that are easy to take on and off. Some houses require shoes to be taken off, and the easier the shoe is to get off the less stress you are going to have to make the right decision!
  4. Lastly, make sure your agent has a plan in place for the houses you are going to tour. The plan should include houses in geographical order with not too much lag time in between each showing. A schedule is very important when the children are involved and along for the ride!
